2014 Taiwan LPGA Tour Hitachi Ladies Classic 10 –12 Jan Final Round Recap
Date:2014-01-12

Four years, and three victories; Thailand’s LPGA star Pornanong Phatlum snags her record-breaking third title at the Hitachi Ladies Classic after carding another 3-under 69 in Sunday’s final round.

She was the winner here at the Orient Golf & Country Club in 2011 and 2013. Her three rounds this year of 70-69-69 and a total 208 outclassed Taiwanese Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸) by a convincing five shots, and took away with a winner prize of NT$2.5 million. She becomes the first player in the tournament’s six-year history to have clinched three titles.

Comfortable throughout the day, Phatlum’s sole mistake came in as indifferently late on par-4 Hole 17 when she left with a bogey. Her 3-under front nine (33) was solid enough for a win in her first event of the season.

“I like this course very much. Thanks to the fans. Their supports have been amazing all week,” said Phatlum.

Entering the round with a 3-shot deficit, Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸) opened the day with a birdie on the first hole only to watch Phatlum showing why she is one of the most promising LPGA star, as displaying her wizardry of shots to keep widening the gap.

Chien turned in a final-round 71 to finish at 213 and solo second, earning prize of NT$1.2 million, her biggest prize to date as a pro. “I used to crumble down the pressure in the final group of the final rounds, but I’m really glad I improved so much mentally and managed to score at under-par.” With today’s score, Chien qualifies for the 2015 sponsorship provided by WINTEK.

Up and coming 19-year-old Korean Kim Min-Sun finished strong with a final-round 69 to sit in lone third place. Japanese Lala Anai came up to the solo fourth after firing a low-round-of-the-day 67.

Taiwanese Hsu Wei-Ling (徐薇淩), Lee Min (李旻), Hsieh Yu-Ling (謝瑀玲), Amy Hung (洪晏瑀), and Thai Nontaya Srisawang finished in a tie for fifth place at 217. “Hitachi Taiwan Star” Yeh Hsin-Ning (葉欣寧) closed out the day in style with a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for 17th at 221.

Annual proceeds from the tournament will be used to endow local charities. Each year the Hitachi Ladies Classic enjoys significant growth of supports by sponsors, players, and visitors. Over the last five years, the tournament has raised donation exceeding NT$20 millions, and this year celebrates a landmark year with a record NT$5.5-million donation.
