2014 Taiwan LPGA Tour Meridigen Technology Cup Tournament Preview
Date:2014-06-25

The Taiwan LPGA Tour will make its third stop at the Hsin Chu Golf & Country Club for this week’s Meridigen Technology Cup presented by High Tech Charity and Meridigen Biotech co., boasting a NT$3 million purse and a NT$420,000 winner prize. This will be a joint event for the first time with the men starting one day earlier on Thursday.

The three-round tournament returns with elite players from Australia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan, including former winners Shih Huei-Ju (石惠如) (2013) and Tiranan Yoopan (2012).

Other notable players scheduled to vie for the NT$3 million purse include TLPGA no.1 on the money list, Chien Pei-Yun (錢珮芸), and Cheng Meng Chu (陳孟竺), who just recently nabbed the victory at the Chung Cheng Heritage Tour.

The success of this event was an important stride and the crucial eighth stop on the TLPGA 2014 roadmap in pursue of the recognition of WWGR (Women's World Golf Rankings), thanks to the support from the strategic partners in the technology industry, which had united and formed the High Tech Charity to contribute to local golf and other charity-driven events.

According to WWGR guideline, a Tour must have a minimum yearly schedule of ten events to gain eligibility in the application of the membership, while this year the TLPGA had shown its ambitions and released the calendar with up to 20 events, which already surpassed the China LPGA Tour and the ALPG purse-wise as the world’s fifth biggest female golf tour.

If the new bid in July went successful, as soon as in the next season, TLPGA could be able to provide its players the justifications of the official World Ranking points in order to take direct entries into higher-tier events – the short-term goal being the Rio de Janeiro 2016.
