Former World No.1 Yani Tseng (曾雅妮) delivered a flawless third-round 67 at the WPG Ladies Open, a NT$15-million TLPGA Tour major event, recording one eagle and three birdies with no blemish on the card, and overcoming a five-stroke deficit to surge onto the top of the leaderboard at 13-under 203. She will now head into Sunday’s final round with a one-stroke advantage over Tsai Pei-Ying (蔡佩穎).
JLPGA campaigner Tsai Pei-Ying put herself into contention after firing a low-round 66 on Saturday that included five birdies, one bogey, and an eagle on the final hole, bringing her total to 204.
Lee Hsin (李欣), who held a solid lead through the first 36 holes, encountered a string of troubles starting on the 12th hole and struggled to a 9 on the par-5 final hole. She finished the third round with a 5-over 77, dropping into solo third at 208, five shots behind Tseng.
“I felt more focused and intentional with my choices today. Even when my drives weren’t perfect, my second shots created many opportunities for me on the greens," Tseng said. "The only disappointments were my read and speed control on longer putts. My chip from off the green on the 18th came up short, which is for sure a missed chance to gain one or two strokes on that par-5. Anyways, I’m pleased with how I closed out the round, and my goal for tomorrow is to stay aggressive while keeping things steady.”
Tsai was particularly impressive with her short game today, especially on the green. “The greens were really challenging, though, and while I sank many birdies, I also left a few out there,” said the JLPGA Tour member. “Fortunately, I had a great feel for the break on my eagle putt at the 18th, which gave me a wonderful finish. I’m very happy with that.”
Reflecting on her back-nine struggles, Lee Hsin expressed disappointment but remained optimistic about her chances in the final round. “My overall feel wasn’t bad, but for some reason, I just didn’t have confidence in my reads on the greens,” Lee said. “The most unfortunate part was definitely the last hole. My drive went into the woods on the right, and it took a lot of work to get out of there. In fact, I made a chip-and-putt to finally close it out, so saving a 9 was the best I could do to minimize the damage. I hope to be more assertive with my reads on the greens tomorrow.”
