Following her dominant 9-birdie, 1-bogey performance yesterday, Taiwan’s Lee Hsin (李欣) continued her hot streak in the second round of the WPG Ladies Open today. She added five more birdies in a bogey-free round to reach 13-under-par 131, establishing a five-stroke lead halfway through the NT$15-million TLPGA Tour major event.
Yani Tseng (曾雅妮), who sat in second place after yesterday’s play, remained in solo second after carding a 70 with one eagle, three birdies, and three bogeys, bringing her 36-hole total to 8-under 136.
JLPGA Tour campaigner Tsai Pei-Ying (蔡佩穎) maintained her consistent form, firing her second consecutive 69 to move into a tie for third place at 138 alongside Thai talents Prima Thammaraks and Sherman Santiwiwattanaphong.
Despite less-than-ideal iron play and lower greens-in-regulation rate compared to yesterday, Lee Hsin relied on exceptional scrambling around the greens to save par on several occasions, resulting in a clean, bogey-free scorecard. “My short game was very efficient today, and I was able to execute my key putts exactly as I intended,” said Lee, who only needed 24 putts on Friday.
Starting on the back nine, Yani Tseng struggled to find form and was over par for most of the day until the final two holes, where she closed with a birdie on the 8th and an eagle on the 9th to hold onto solo second place. “I was overthinking things out there today and I felt hesitant with my distance control,” Tseng said. “I’m just really happy I could pull it together on the final two holes to finish still in the top-2.”
After this week, Tseng will fly to Los Angeles to prepare for the U.S. Women’s Open (LPGA Tour), which takes place from June 4 to 7. “I look forward to using this week at Sunrise to fine-tune my game to its best possible state,” she added.
Tsai Pei-Ying also surged into the front-runners thanks to a final-hole eagle. Benefiting from a tailwind off the 18th tee, she reached the green in two shots and sank the subsequent putt for an eagle. “I had a lot of birdie looks over the past two days. My putting actually felt better today. I finished with 27 putts, and even when I missed the green, I stayed pretty confident on the greens and kept the momentum going well.”
Following the conclusion of the second round, the cut was set at 4-over 148, sending 67 players into the third round. Winner on Sunday will have her name etched alongside the other six previous champions onto the iconic 3D-printed trophy.
