Taiwan’s Lee Hsin (李欣) battled the heatwave to fire a 64 in the opening round of the 2026 WPG Ladies Open, a TLPGA Tour major event with a total prize purse of NT$15 million. Her round was highlighted by nine birdies and only one bogey, lifting her into a two-stroke solo lead.
Backdrop for this week is Sunrise Golf & Country Club. WPG Holdings, an ESG-friendly, global-leading distributor of semiconductor components, has planted nearly 2,500 trees in the community, and expects to add another 1,200 this year with the ongoing "One Birdie, One Tree" campaign since 2024.
Local favorite, former world no.1 and five-time LPGA Tour major champion Yani Tseng (曾雅妮) replicated her magical form from her winning week at last year’s Wistron Ladies Open, another TLPGA major, carding a bogey-free 66 with one eagle and four birdies to sit in a tie for second.
Thai golfers Kamonwan Lueamsri and Kultida Pramphun both turned in rounds of 67, placing them in a tie for third, three strokes off the lead.
“The yardage is set up longer this year than in the previous two years, so I was very focused on the accuracy of my long game for better attacking opportunities,” said Lee Hsin. “I’ve made several adjustments with my coach recently, and I’m feeling great especially with my irons and putter. I was able to capitalize on the birdie chances I created, and this is the best round I’ve ever recorded in a tournament at Sunrise. Moving forward, I plan to stick to my rhythm and remain aggressive.”
Yani Tseng’s drives today consistently set up excellent angles for her approaches, allowing her to score well on the par-5s. “A few of the longer par-3s and par-4s were quite challenging, but fortunately, my putting was pretty steady, which helped me save a lot of pars,” Tseng added. “I managed to close out the round with a birdie on the 17th and an eagle on the 18th, which was a fantastic ending.”
Lueamsri was pleased with her opening-round performance. “The layout is indeed very long this week, making it difficult to reach greens in regulation, but I was able to make up for it with my putting! It was a great day at the office,” said the Thai player, who needed only 23 putts.
Her compatriot Pramphun also took advantage of her stellar short game to card seven birdies against just two bogeys, leaving her three shots behind Lee.
Lin Yi-Hui (林怡潓) stole the show on the 11th hole, using an 8-iron to hole out from 145 yards for an ace, securing the hole-in-one bonus cash prize. At the end of the day, Lin registered a 2-under 70 and sit in equal 14th place.
The 2026 WPG Ladies Open is title-sponsored by WPG Holdings. Joint Diamond sponsors include Kioxia and MPS. Platinum sponsors include AOS, Micron, Molex, Nexperia, Onsemi, and STMicroelectronics. Gold sponsors include Chunghwa Telecom, Deloitte, Diodes, Microsoft, Macronix, Nuvoton, Palo Alto Networks, PennEngineering, PwC, Semtech, SunnyHills, Toshiba, uPI, Vishay, Winbond, Wolfspeed, Zilltek, and Yi-Wan Construction.
Among the 113 professional and amateur golfers competing in this week’s TLPGA major is defending champion and WPG-sponsored star Lee Min (李旻), who turned in a 75 to drop into a tie for 73rd.
Hole-in-one prizes of NT$100,000 cash will be provided by WPG on Hole no.2, 4, 11,16 for each ace during the four rounds. Winner on Sunday will have her name etched alongside the other six previous champions onto the iconic 3D-printed trophy.
A cut is scheduled after the second-round, sending only the top-50 and ties into the second half of competition. |
