Korea’s Kang Jeonghyeon carded a gritty 71 today at Summit Point Golf and Country Club to seize the lead heading into the final round of the ICTSI Philippine Ladies Masters. Starting the day in a tie for second at 5-under, Kang’s two-round total of 138 was enough to overtake overnight leader Lee Yunseo.
The US$200,000, 54-hole tournament marks a historic first as the TLPGA Tour’s season opener. The event is co-sanctioned by the TLPGA Tour, the Ladies Philippine Golf Tour (LPGT), and the KLPGA Tour, with backing from the Asia Golf Leaders Forum (AGLF).
Taiwan’s Huang Ching (黃靖), who started the day in equal ninth, climbed the leaderboard with a steady round of 69 which included four birdies and just one bogey. She sits in a tie for second at 5-under 139 alongside Korea’s Hwang Yeonseo, who fired the low round of the day with a scintillating 67.
A strong group follows just two strokes off the lead at 140, including former LPGA Tour campaigner Lee Min (李旻), Lin Tzu-Chi (林子麒), and first-round leader Lee Yunseo.
The unpredictable winds at Summit Point continued to test the international field, but Kang maintained a composed mindset. "I tried not to overthink and just focused on playing my game," Kang said. "Apart from that double-bogey on the 17th after a strong crosswind pushed my drive into a bunker, it was a very smooth round."
Huang Ching was also in the zone, combating the gusts with low-trajectory shots. "I tried to keep the ball low to minimize the impact," Huang explained. "My luck was good today, and my short game really came through with some crucial saves."
Lee Min lamented missed opportunities on the back nine, but a second-round 71 still kept her in the front pack. "The greens are tough to read, and the flags were in challenging spots today," Lee said. "I had to rely on my local caddie. She knows this course so well, and she was so helpful for me. There were still several holes where I felt I was just a hair away from a birdie!"
Meanwhile, Lin Tzu-Chi showcased her ability in windy conditions, bouncing back from a shaky start yesterday. "I actually enjoy playing in windy conditions," said Lin. "Yesterday I was still warming up and opened with three bogeys in the first four holes. Today, I felt in control right from the start, and I’m very happy with my 68."
A cut was made at 6-over 150 after 36 holes concluded on Thursday. A total of 62 players advanced to Friday’s final showdown.
The ICTSI Philippine Ladies Masters marks the 18th official co-sanctioned event between the TLPGA Tour and the LPGT, solidifying a long-standing partnership between Taiwan and the Philippines. |
